Collections

Collections are used to group subsets of data in IATE pertaining to specific projects or subdomains and to simplify the management of that data. Collections can be attached to the Language-Independent Level (LIL), Language Level (LL) and/or Term Level (TL).

  • Collections are attached to the Language-Independent Level (LIL) when they are managed by the central terminology coordination teams in each institution. Multilingual interinstitutional (EU-) collections are also attached to the LIL.
  • Language-specific collections are attached to the Language Level (LL) or Term Level (TL).
  • Collections attached to the Term Level (TL) are also useful to group specific terms for various data management purposes.
There are three types of collection:
– ‘related to subject area‘, used for thematic collections
– ‘related to project management‘, used for projects
– ‘miscellaneous‘, used for various administrative purposes.
The name of a collection follows this pattern:
INSTITUTION CODE–LANG CODE–SHORT NAME–YEAR

Examples:
Consilium-MUL-International organisations
EP-MUL-EP Political bodies
CJUE-MUL-Juridictions Nationales/National courts, tribunals
COM-eGOV
COM-COVID19
COM-SV-Waste
EU-LA-TAXONOMY

If the collection is interinstitutional, the institution code will be EU.
If the collection is multilingual, the language code will be MUL.
The year is optional.

You can create a new collection at LIL, LL and/or TL when creating an entry or updating an existing entry by clicking on ‘Create new collection’.

The collection creation form has the following fields:

  • a drop-down list of institutions, including ‘EU’ (mandatory);
  • a drop-down list of languages (optional);
  • a collection short name that is unique (max. 70 characters; hyphen, minus sign, en-dash and em-dash are not allowed) (mandatory);
  • a drop-down list of years (optional);
  • a collection description (max. 2 500 characters) (mandatory). The description should
    be in English or in French, and its content should be transparent for other users.
  • a collection type (project management-related, subject area-related, miscellaneous) (mandatory). Each type is displayed in a different colour.
  • the protection toggle button.
  • the confidentiality toggle button.

Once you create the new collection, an ID is automatically assigned to it.
