Entry-to-entry links

It is possible to link to another entry in any free text field (except ‘Term’ and ‘Term in
context’).

On this page, you will find a description of the three ways to create entry-to-entry links:

  • Automatic creation using the entry ID
  • Manual creation using the entry ID
  • Automatic creation using the URL
AUTOMATIC CREATION USING THE ENTRY ID

To create an entry-to-entry link using the entry ID as the link text:

  • click on the ‘Add link’ icon in the formatting bar and open the ‘Entry-to-entry link’ tab,
  • insert the text to be displayed as a hyperlink and the entry ID,
  • select which language the linked entry will be displayed in, either ‘all’ or a specific language.
If the text you want to be displayed as the hyperlink is already in the text box, you can highlight it before clicking the ‘Add link’ icon, so that you do not have to enter it into the ‘Text’ field again.
MANUAL CREATION USING THE ENTRY ID

To create the link manually:

  • type IATE:entryID directly in the ‘Text’ field (e.g. IATE:1393108), and
  • if you wish, add the language to be displayed (e.g. IATE:1393108/en).

This will create a link to the relevant entry (and language) if it exists once you save your changes.

Make sure to not copy over any formatting when copy-pasting entry IDs, since this will prevent the manual link from being generated. Clear any formatting with the ‘Remove formatting’ icon.
AUTOMATIC CREATION USING THE URL

To use the term rather than the entry ID as the link text:

  • click on the ‘Add link’ button in the formatting bar but stay on the ‘External link’ tab,
  • enter the link text in the ‘Text’ field and the IATE permanent link (displayed at the bottom of the full entry view) in the ‘URL’ box,
  • add the language(s) to be displayed at the end, if necessary. For example:
  • https://iate.europa.eu/entry/result/1393108/en
  • https://iate.europa.eu/entry/result/1393108/en-fr
  • https://iate.europa.eu/entry/result/1393108/en-all

The choice between these three options depends on your needs and preferences and/or those of your language community. The first option is automatic and prevents copy-pasting and formatting issues. The second option may be quicker. In both cases, the hyperlink text is the entry number, which can enhance clarity, but may interrupt the flow of the text. The third option allows you to use the term (or other appropriate text) as the link text, making it easier to read, but inserting the URL (and removing the date of consultation) takes more time and effort. Although the entry number is not visible in the link text, it can be seen in the bottom-left corner when you hover over the hyperlink.
