The domain is the field of knowledge to which the concept belongs. The chosen domain(s) should clearly identify the special language and context of the concept. An IATE entry should usually have between one and three domains. Domains are indicated at the language-independent level (LIL). Read more about the Language-Independent Level.
IATE uses EuroVoc ☍, the European Union’s multilingual thesaurus managed by the Publications Office, as the domain classification for IATE entries.
Domains are represented by EuroVoc ☍
- domains (level one, two digits),
- subdomains (level two, four digits), or
- descriptors (levels three to eight, no digits).
IATE uses the full EuroVoc thesaurus (not just the first three levels, as was the case in the previous version of the IATE system) and currently uses EuroVoc version 4.6.
Additionally, a second LAW branch (14 LAW) has been added to include the specific classification used by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Since some of the subdomains under the CJEU LAW branch are also present in the EuroVoc domain classification, the domain filter available in the search and in the IATE downloads also retrieves the equivalent domains when available.
 To look for domains, you can either browse the domain classification by expanding (using the black arrows  ) and collapsing the different domains, subdomains and descriptors individually or by expanding the full tree at once, or search for a keyword in the search field. |

Once you have identified the relevant domain, subdomain or descriptor, click on it to add it to the list of selected domains.
When running a search filtered by domain, by default IATE will search in subdomains too, but you can restrict your search to the selected domain(s) by toggling the sliding button 
.
To remove a domain from your selection, hover your mouse over it in the domain tree or in the list of selected domains, and click on the bin  icon. |
 You can reuse the set of domains selected in a particular search by saving them: click on the clipboard  button and hit the ‘Save to clipboard’ button in the domain selector. You will then see the saved domains when you next open the domain selector, and you can insert the relevant set of domains in your search by clicking the ‘Insert from clipboard’ button. |
