DOMAIN

The domain is the field of knowledge to which the concept belongs.

Domains are represented by domains (level 1, two digits), subdomains (level two, four digits) or descriptors (levels three to eight, no digits) from EuroVoc ☍ (the EU’s multilingual thesaurus). IATE uses the full EuroVoc thesaurus (and not just the first three levels, as was the case in the previous version of the system).

Additionally, a second LAW branch (14 LAW) has been added to include the specific classification used by the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Since many of the subdomains under the CJEU LAW branch are also present in the EuroVoc domain classification, the domain filter available in the search and in the IATE downloads includes the equivalent domains, when available.

PRIMARY ENTRY

A ‘primary entry’ is the main entry for a particular concept, and meets certain minimum quality standards (e.g. the concept must be clearly identified in at least the anchor language). Entries not labelled as ‘primary’ are likely to be of lower quality and/or less reliable. Primary entries which have terms that correspond exactly to your search will appear first among possible duplicates on your list of results.

Primary entries are marked with a star next to the entry number.
ANCHOR LANGUAGE

The anchor language is the anchor to which all the other languages in the entry are attached. The anchor language is usually the source language of the text in which the term occurred. However, if the object of a concept is country-specific, the anchor language will be (one of) the language(s) of the country concerned (which should be indicated in the ‘Origins’ field). For animals, plants and other life forms, the anchor language is usually Latin.

ORIGINS & ORIGIN NOTE

The origin indicates that a concept is country-specific or EU-specific.

The origin note can be used to give more specific information on the national or geographical origin of a concept. It is usually written in English.

LIFECYCLE

This field indicates whether the object of an entry is possibly ‘historical’ (no longer in use or existing), ‘proposed’ (and not yet adopted), or ‘abandoned’ (proposed but not adopted in the end).

CROSS-REFERENCES

An entry can contain one or more cross-references to other entries in the specific LIL field.

LANGUAGE-INDEPENDENT LEVEL NOTES & REFERENCE(S)

The LIL notes field contains information that relates to the concept and applies to all languages, rather than to a specific language or term.

The LIL note reference indicates the source of the information.

COLLECTIONS

Some entries are grouped in ‘collections’ relating to a specific subject area or to a project. Read more about collections.

Public collections are visible to external users, whereas confidential ones are not.
ATTACHMENTS & NOTE

Relevant documents or graphics can be attached to an entry.

A description of the attached file can be provided in the attachment note field.

OWNER

This field indicates the institution of the user that created this level, which is responsible for the validation of the content within it.
