The domain is the field of knowledge to which the concept belongs. An IATE entry should usually have between one and three domains. Domains are indicated at the language-independent level (LIL). Read more about the language-independent level (LIL).
IATE currently uses version 4.6 of EuroVoc ☍, the European Union’s multilingual thesaurus managed by the Publications Office, in its entirety, as the domain classification for IATE entries.
EuroVoc ☍ divides the hierarchy of these fields of knowledge into:
- domains (level one), i.e. the broadest, most general fields, which are preceded by two digits,
- subdomains (level two), which are preceded by four digits, and
- descriptors (levels three to eight), which are not preceded by any digits.
Additionally, a second LAW branch (14 LAW) has been added to include the specific classification used by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Since some of the subdomains under the CJEU LAW branch are also present in the EuroVoc domain classification, the domain filter available in the search and in IATE downloads will retrieve results for both of the equivalent or ‘identical’ domains.
