The internal IATE plug-ins for Trados Studio provide direct access to IATE’s term recognition features within Trados Studio, allowing users to leverage IATE’s interoperability from a single platform. These plug-ins are only available for internal users from the IATE partner institutions using Trados Studio 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024. The internal IATE plug-ins for Trados Studio include two term recognition features: the IATE Studio Batch Task and the IATE TRM Terminology Provider.
On this page you will find out how to:
- Use the IATE Studio Batch Task plug-in
- Use the IATE TRM Terminology Provider plug-in
- Use both plug-ins simultaneously
- Customise the plug-in settings

USE THE IATE STUDIO BATCH TASK PLUG-IN
The IATE Studio Batch Task plug-in generates a IATE termbase for each document contained within a Studio project. The IATE termbases are automatically attached to the project once they are created.
To use the IATE Studio batch task plug-in:
- In Studio, select the project for which you wish to run the batch task (in ‘Projects’ view or in ‘Files’ view).
- On the ‘Home’ ribbon, click on ‘Batch tasks‘ and select ‘IATE Studio Batch Task‘.
- Click on ‘Next’ to access the filter settings.
- Customise the settings (or keep the default ones), decide whether to execute the task after core hours or now, and click on ‘Finish‘.
Tip: To prevent system overload, long documents should be scheduled to be processed after core hours. |
You will then get a message indicating that you can start working on your files and will be alerted once the IATE termbase is ready and attached to your project. If you scheduled the task to be carried out after core hours, you can retrieve your IATE termbase the following day. Launch a new batch task and the system will ask you if you want to retrieve the file that has already been generated.
If your project contains several files, you will get a separate message for each file to confirm that the request for a IATE termbase has been launched. Likewise, you will be notified after each termbase has been generated.
Additionally, it is possible to generate a new IATE termbase for the same project with different filters or criteria. To do this, just run the batch task again as described above. If a previous task is found for the same project, you will have the option to reuse the result or generate a new task. If you launch a new task, once the termbase is generated, it will automatically attach to the project and replace the previous termbase.
Tip: click on the ‘IATE Batch Task Status’ button on the ‘Home’ ribbon to monitor the processing of the different tasks with the filename, language combination, request date, status, and whether it is scheduled or not. |
USE THE IATE TRM TERMINOLOGY PROVIDER PLUG-IN
The IATE TRM Terminology Provider plug-in offers live, segment-based term recognition. This means that no physical termbase is attached to the project, as IATE is being consulted almost in real time, and the results are directly displayed in the Term Recognition window in Trados Studio.
To use the plug-in:
- Select the project in ‘Projects’ view or in ‘Files’ view, or directly open the file in the ‘Editor’ view.
- Click on ‘Project Settings‘ and go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases
- Click on Use > IATE TRM Terminology Provider
- Customise the settings (or keep the default ones) and click on ‘Apply‘.
Tip: We recommend that you disable the ‘LookAhead’ function in Trados Studio to maximise the performance of the IATE TRM Terminology Provider. To do this, go to File > Options > Editor > Automation, and make sure ‘Enable LookAhead’ is unticked. |
Once you add the IATE TRM Terminology Provider you will see that the message ‘Searching for terms…’ appears in the ‘Term Recognition‘ window when you click on a segment in the ‘Editor’ view in Studio. After a few seconds, the IATE terms retrieved by the IATE Terminology Provider will appear. If you move to the following segments, the content will appear immediately as it should already be pre-loaded. However, if you move to a segment further away in the document, the IATE TRM Terminology Provider might need to take a few seconds again to load the new terms.
When you add the plug-in this way, its settings are read-only because they are not directly related to any specific project. Once a new project is created (with the plug-in now being attached automatically), the plug-in settings are set according to the default algorithm (general default, your institution’s default, or your own saved ‘favourite settings’) and can be modified in Project Settings. |
USE BOTH PLUG-INS SIMULTANEOUSLY
You can use both plug-ins simultaneously, but the results might overlap to a great extent (unless very different filters have been set for each of the features).
Furthermore, if several termbases are already loaded onto your Studio project when you add the IATE TRM Terminology Provider, it is possible that the order of the termbases will change when you reopen the project. The plug-in does not have any control over this, so you will have to manually move the termbases up or down, based on your own preferences, by going to Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases.
If you are using local termbases (such as the one generated by the IATE Studio Batch Task) alongside the IATE TRM Terminology Provider, you will need to wait for the live results from the provider to see the results from the local termbases too. This is normal for Trados Studio, as it always waits for all termbases to load before displaying anything.
CUSTOMISE THE PLUG-IN SETTINGS
Both plug-ins can be customised with the same settings* to provide the following filtering possibilities:
- Domains: by default, all domains are selected, but you can narrow your results by selecting only a limited number of domains. The domains are the EuroVoc and CJEU domains used to classify each IATE entry. In order to change the default domain selection, click on ‘Show domains selection’ and then select the domains you are interested in. Please note that you can only filter by top-level domains.
- Minimum reliability (target language): the default value is ‘minimum reliability’ (2 stars in IATE), which means that target terms with reliability 0 and 1 will not be retrieved.
- Primarity: by default, all entries (primary and not primary) are retrieved.
- Owner (institution) of the target TL: by default, terms from all institutions are retrieved.
- Evaluation (target language): by default, all terms (deprecated, obsolete, admitted, preferred, and proposed) are retrieved.
- Validation (target language): by default, only pre-IATE terms are excluded.
- Term type (source language): by default, only lookup forms are excluded.
- LL aggregated field completion score (target language): by default, only entries with a target language containing a score considered average to high are retrieved.
- ‘In collection’ and ‘Not in collection’: by default, no collection is added. You can type a keyword to launch a search by collection name and add the desired collection(s) as a filter, so that only entries included or not included in the selected collection(s) are retrieved.
- *Include matches without target: by default, it is disabled. It is only available with the IATE Studio Batch Task plug-in.
Your institution’s default settings might be different, as they are determined by your central terminology coordination service. Click on ‘Save favourite settings‘ if you want to save a customised configuration. If you click on ‘Reset settings‘, you will restore them to default. You can easily retrieve your customised configuration by clicking on ‘Load favourite settings‘. Please note that a separate favourite settings file is saved for each plug-in. |
