Validation in IATE serves as a confirmation that an entry has undergone a basic check to ensure that it meets IATE data entry rules and is suitable for public release, even if its content can be further updated and improved at a later stage. Each institution’s terminologists are responsible for validating entries in their respective languages.
Terminologists can validate data via:
- the ‘validate’ icon or ‘validate all’ button from the full entry view.
- the dotted line to the left of a TL (by right-clicking it) to validate a language level (LL) and all its term levels (TLs) for which you have validation rights in one go.
- the contextual menu. The option to set all LLs and TLs as ‘validated’, ‘not validated’ or ‘pre-IATE’ is available in the contextual menu that appears when you right-click on the LIL, the dotted line to the left of a TL, or the language code above the LL.
- the quick edit panel. You can choose ‘Validate all’ under a specific language code or validate a single level under the relevant LL or TL section.
- the validation monitoring screen, available in the ‘Management’ menu
, where you can open and then validate entries. Items to be validated appear in orange in the results list.
PRE-IATE
Pre-IATE is a validation status used to mark entries that do not fulfil the quality criteria of ‘real’ IATE entries. It can be used, for example, for draft data that still need to be reviewed and validated, or for old data that need to be set aside for analysis or updates.
By default, new entries are ‘IATE data’ (either validated or not validated). However, users with specific rights can set the status of LLs and TLs to ‘pre-IATE’ when creating an entry, modifying data, or importing data via:
- the contextual menu
- the pre-IATE field (available at LL and TL);
- the quick edit panel (at LL and TL);
- a batch update (Administrators only).
Pre-IATE data are not displayed for non-authenticated users. Internal logged-in users can decide whether to include or exclude this data from their search results, either via their user preferences or by filtering out pre-IATE results at TL or LL in the expanded search filters on the search screen (click on ‘Show more’).
If a pre-IATE entry relates to a useful concept which does not appear elsewhere in IATE, make any changes needed to the TL(s) in your language, your LL, and the LIL, then select ‘Set as not pre-IATE’ in the contextual menu for the LL and TL(s).
