DISCLAIMER
The IATE terminology management system was developed to serve as a working tool for the translation services of the institutions and bodies of the European Union. The IATE partners are the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, the European Court of Auditors, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Committee of the Regions, the European Investment Bank and the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union. IATE is managed on behalf of these institutions and bodies by the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union.
IATE offers read-only access to public users, allowing them to consult validated, non-confidential and non-internal data via a main graphical user interface under https://iate.europa.eu, via a search widget and via a search application programming interface (API). This public access to IATE is not a guaranteed public service, but our goal is to keep it working in the best possible conditions. If errors are brought to our attention, we will try to correct them.
The European Union accepts no responsibility or liability whatsoever with regard to the data in IATE.
This data is:
- of a general nature only and is not intended to address the specific circumstances of any particular individual or entity;
- not necessarily comprehensive, complete, accurate or up to date;
- sometimes linked to external sites over which the European Union services have no control and for which the European Union assumes no responsibility;
- not intended as professional or legal advice (if you need specific advice, you should always consult a suitably qualified professional).
Besides the data available for consultation via the main graphical user interface, the search widget and the search API of the system, a downloadable copy of IATE entries with limited information is also available to users (https://iate.europa.eu/download-iate). This data may have been created or structured in files or formats that are not error-free and we cannot guarantee that our service will not be interrupted or otherwise affected by such problems. The European Union accepts no responsibility with regard to such problems incurred as a result of using this site or any linked external sites.
Please read the Copyright notice carefully before copying any parts or content from this website, from the results obtained via the IATE search widget or search API or from the downloadable IATE file. Copying from this website or from the results made available via the search widget or search API is forbidden unless it is explicitly allowed in accordance with that section.
Despite extensive research, it may be that we have not been able to identify certain authors or rightholders of data appearing on this site. If you are such a rightholder, or if you have identified such a rightholder, or if there is a mistake on our part, we should be grateful if you would contact us. We will do our best to rectify the situation without delay.
IATE SEARCH WIDGET
The IATE search widget allows you to search and display European Union multilingual terminology from IATE on your website, platform or blog by embedding a piece of code. No login is required. A set of templates are made available under ‘IATE for developers’ addressing various use cases and showcasing the IATE look and feel.
The IATE search widget is fully customisable to match the design of the platform it is placed on, and the search criteria and labels which are more suitable for the target users. If you decide to customise the IATE search widget, you should make sure that IATE is clearly identified as the data source (via the IATE logo or an explicit mention in a prominent location) and indicate any changes you have done. Modifications and visualisations which may damage or distort the image and reputation of IATE and the European Union are strictly prohibited.
DOCUMENT PROCESSING FEATURES IN IATE FOR INTERNAL USERS
Besides the consultation and management of terminological entries and terminology projects and users’ accounts, IATE also offers document processing features for internal users, namely a Terminology Recognition Module and a Term Extraction Module. Both modules process documents and segments submitted by internal IATE users with specific permissions, using own developed engines to identify IATE matches and term candidates, and generate an output (a termbase or highlighted HTML document with IATE matches and their metadata in the case of the Term Recognition Module, and a list of term candidates with metadata in the case of the Term Extraction Module). Different entry points can be used for submitting content to these IATE modules: IATE graphic user interface, IATE APIs, internal CAT tool plug-in. The content of the document is not analysed or stored and data are not shared with third parties.
These modules are hosted in the IATE AWS Cloud and the documents are encrypted in transit and at rest and only kept in the servers the time of their processing and deleted immediately afterwards. The output of the processing (termbase or list of term candidates) is available for download during 72 hours in the case of termbases and during 6 months for the lists of term candidates.
Basic statistics (number of requests per institution) concerning the Term Recognition module are stored in the IATE system.
Users should exercise their judgement when submitting potentially sensitive documents to any online service, including IATE.
EXTERNAL LINK DISCLAIMER
IATE data may contain “external links” to websites in domains other than europa.eu, which may not be owned or funded by the European Union institutions and bodies, over which the IATE partners have no control and for which the IATE partners assume no responsibility.
When IATE users choose to follow a link to any external website, they leave the official IATE site and are subject to the cookie, privacy and legal policies of the external website.
Compliance with applicable data protection and accessibility requirements of external websites linked to from the IATE site fall outside our control and are under the responsibility of the external website’s owner.
COPYRIGHT NOTICE
© European Union, 2026
Copyright in the data displayed on the IATE website or retrieved via the IATE search widget or search API belongs to the rightholders as defined by law. Since IATE contains not only data owned by the European Union but also data belonging to other rightholders, the European Union is not in a position to authorise free downloading, reproduction or dissemination of all data made available on this website or via the search widget or search API for commercial purposes.
To maximise the use of the data collected in IATE, we have made IATE terminology with limited metadata available to the public for download (https://iate.europa.eu/download-iate).
The data made available via these downloads is not copyright protected, and can therefore be freely downloaded and reproduced, for personal use or for further non-commercial or commercial dissemination. The European Union retains the copyright of the database structure of the downloadable file, but hereby authorises downloading and reproduction, for personal use or for further non-commercial or commercial dissemination, also of the database structure as available in the downloadable file.
We remind you that this authorisation is restricted to the database structure and data made available in the file for download, and does not include data retrieved via the IATE search widget, via the search API or via the IATE website.
You may be required to clear additional rights if certain content depicts identifiable private individuals or includes third-party works. To use or reproduce content not owned by the European Union, you may need to seek permission directly from the rightholders. Software or documents covered by industrial property rights, such as patents, trademarks, registered designs, logos and names, are excluded from the European Union’s reuse policy and are not licensed to you.
To use the IATE logo, you first need the prior consent of the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union, who represents the IATE partners.
PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION
The European Union is committed to user privacy.
The policy on “protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by the Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies and on the free movement of such data” is based on Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2018.
You can browse the public part of the IATE website or query IATE via the public search API without giving away any personal information (as anonymous user). Information on the settings and searches run by IATE anonymous visitors is saved in the local storage of the browser of the users, sent to the server from the browser or API, and also tracked by first-party persistent cookies from Europa Analytics if the user chooses to accept cookies via the banner on the home page. This information is used to improve the user experience (settings) and produce statistics about visitors (location, date and time of the request, pages viewed, files downloaded, etc.). The data collected does not contain personal information, just a randomly generated ID which can be used to identify when a user comes back to IATE, and cannot therefore be used to identify a particular visitor. It will not be shared with any other organisations for marketing, market research or commercial purposes. All persistent cookies have an expiration date and after that date they will be automatically removed from the user’s computer.
The Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union retains full responsibility and control on behalf of the IATE partners of the data stored in the IATE servers as described in the previous paragraph.
The European Commission retains full responsibility and control on behalf of the IATE partners of the data collected through first-party cookies and tags (Europa Analytics) by storing the data in servers fully owned and controlled by the European Commission.
Public users wishing to access IATE with an EU Login external account will have the benefit of being able to set additional user preferences which are saved in their profile and accessing additional features. An operational authentication cookie is stored in your computer when you log in so that the system can remember you in future sessions. When you log in, you accept the EU Login associated privacy policy (https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/cas/privacyStatement.html).
Internal users normally access IATE with their EU Login internal account in order to access internal data and advanced features. In the same way, you accept the EU Login associated privacy policy (https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/cas/privacyStatement.html).
For more information on EU Login, you can consult https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/cas/about.html.

PRIVACY STATEMENT FOR IATE INTERNAL USERS
For the purpose of this privacy statement, IATE is understood to mean the website content, which is controlled by the IATE partners and managed by the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union on behalf of these partners.
The IATE terminology management system responds mainly to a need of EU linguists and authors and is the result of exemplary interinstitutional cooperation in Terminology.
IATE processes personal data of internal users and to a very limited extent of external users. To this end, it complies with the provisions of the Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by the Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies and on the free movement of such data.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF COLLECTING/PUBLISHING PERSONAL DATA ON IATE?
Internal users’ personal data are collected and published in IATE in order to audit changes in the system and to enhance communication among the central terminology coordination services and the translators, terminologists and other users with read or write rights from the European institutions participating in IATE or using it for consultation purposes.
Personal data are mainly published under the following sections, which are only visible to internal users:
- Audit/history of entries,
- Data monitoring screens (validation, marks, etc.),
- Comments and feedback by users.
Individual statistics are only accessible to the individual users, unless some IATE partners agree internally that specific super users can have access to individual statistics from users from their own institution, in which case specific rights are given. Shared IATE statistics are of a general nature and do not exploit or contain personal data.
External logged users’ personal data are exclusively collected for the account and feedback management and can be seen by internal users with advanced rights to manage external users’ accounts and public feedback.
WHAT PERSONAL DATA ARE COLLECTED?
The collected personal data are obtained mainly from the EU Login account and by the central terminology coordination services. In the case of internal users, these data include:
- Name and surname,
- E-mail,
- Institution and division,
- User name,
- Working language(s),
- Role.
Actions performed by internal registered users in IATE are stored in the audit component of the system.
In the case of external users, these data include:
- Name and surname,
- E-mail,
- Role.
For API consumers, we also collect information on the organisation to which you belong, the purpose of the use and the expected volume of queries to evaluate potential performance issues. This information is provided by you upon request and it is managed directly by the IATE Support & Development Team and not shared with other IATE users.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROCESSING PERSONAL DATA?
The Data Controller, i.e. the person responsible for any data processing operation in the framework of IATE, is Mr Mauro Bubnic, Head of the Translation Support Department of the Translation Centre, who can be contacted at iate@cdt.europa.eu.
WHICH TECHNICAL MEANS ARE USED TO PROCESS YOUR PERSONAL DATA?
The personal data are stored in the IATE user access control database and the IATE entry management database hosted in the IATE AWS Cloud, directly managed by the IATE Support & Development Team via a secured access according to the IATE Security Plan.
The IATE system is accessed by users through an internet browser or via the IATE APIs (Application Programming Interface). Users can be granted read or write access after being identified as external or internal users (internal users include translators, terminologists, terminology coordinators and lawyer-linguists of the European institutions).
HOW IS THE ACCESS TO IATE PROTECTED?
Internal access to IATE is allowed only for users who have an authorised identifier, which is granted on an individual basis via the European Commission’s Identity Management System (IMS) through the EU Login system, and where the users belong to an EU institution or body. That system has its own Privacy Statement.
Central terminology services of the EU institutions and bodies can also access IATE with generic accounts (username and password).
Internal access to the IATE User Access Control module is only allowed for users with a specific management role.
Direct access to the IATE databases is exclusive to the system administrator of the IATE Support & Development Team via secured authentication. Certain users in the central terminology services can also query the IATE databases via specific tools with secured credentials and restricted access.
WHO HAS ACCESS TO USERS’ INFORMATION AND TO WHOM IS IT DISCLOSED?
Users’ information is only visible to internal users (users belonging to an EU institution or body) with read and/or write rights (namely authors, translators, lawyer-linguists, terminologists, terminology coordinators and members of the IATE Support & Development Team).
The IATE Support & Development Team and certain users in the central terminology services have access to users’ information stored in the audit by querying the IATE database directly or via specific tools. Users’ information is exclusively used for data management and direct communication purposes.
Internal EU users can also access users’ information related to the audit via the IATE graphical user interface or the IATE APIs if they have the necessary rights in their profile.
External users do not have access to users’ information, apart from their own if they are registered users.
HOW CAN PERSONAL DATA BE ACCESSED, VERIFIED AND, IF NECESSARY, CORRECTED?
Personal data can be accessed by the IATE Support and Development Team and by the central terminology service via the User Access Control module. Internal and external users can also access their own personal data under their profile.
To have contact details verified or corrected, you can send an e-mail to: iate@cdt.europa.eu.
Data subjects may also contact the Data Protection Officer (DPO) of the Translation Centre (data-protection@cdt.europa.eu) concerning the data processing.
Data subjects have the right to have recourse at any time to the European Data Protection Supervisor (edps@edps.europa.eu).
HOW LONG ARE PERSONAL DATA KEPT?
Personal data stored in IATE is always related to the use of the tool and the changes made to terminological entries. For audit and history reasons, these data are stored permanently.
WHAT ARE THE SECURITY MEASURES TAKEN TO SAFEGUARD PERSONAL INFORMATION AGAINST POSSIBLE MISUSE OR UNAUTHORISED ACCESS?
Personal data is stored in IATE user access control database and the IATE entry management database hosted in the IATE AWS Cloud, directly managed by the IATE Support & Development Team and with a secured access according to the IATE Security Plan, which ensures an adequate security level against threats to the integrity, confidentiality and availability of the IATE electronic assets. More specifically, user authentication is required and enforced to access the internal part of IATE, where personal information can be visible.
This specific processing operation has been included in the DPO’s public register.
The official Data Protection Record can be found here.
